Sands Of Time

The top photo was taken a little bit off the beaten track near Ban Don Dua, about ten kilometres from our home. We were in search of a signposted Dog Farm, our reasons being to buy a high quality low cost puppy for Wonderful Wi.

The Dog Farm which was even further off the beaten track had closed its business a few months back, leaving us to backtrack six kilometres and hope the snake had moved off the road. Wi and myself are both terrified of snakes, especially a two metre one like that.

Today we left the village home behind us and checked back into the Napalai Hotel in Udon Thani. I fly back to England on Wednesday evening giving us two and a half days in a city I really do enjoy. Udon Thani at first appears a sleepy city but once you get to know your way around you soon realize it offers something for everyone, my favourite venue being the Centre Point Night Market.

I now want to take an ideal opportunity to apologize to my growing army of readers. An army not big enough for battle but nonetheless now equipped with two blunt swords and a bag of September wasps. My Internet access in Thailand has been sporadic and when surfed has been on a sands of time , egg timer agenda. My return input to your valued comments has at times been rushed and of poor content, dancing cheek to cheek with my many hurried and unedited posts. My apologies. With my wai higher and my bow attaining much lower altitude I also apologize for my hurried comments, danced at an even greater pace to your wonderful blogs. There’s only so much sand in a goddamn holiday egg timer.

The last paragraph has left me with a perfect opening to mention a future blog. Take a suck on this blog sweet. Next week camped back in Team UK I intend writing a blog that will look back at my 20 day stay in the Land Of Smiles. The blog will be of a question and answer format, I can collect my questions from my Team UK family and friends, I would much prefer to receive them from you. Favourite location, best meal, funniest moment, whatever. If you have a holiday question for me then please email it to hoodon@thaisabai.org or leave it in the comments box. Your question(s) will contain a link back to your site.

Another photo and another thought. You cannot beat a thorough holiday itinerary if you are the sort of person whose shorts unpack better than they ironed. I took this photo in Udon Thani last week and the photo says to me organization at its uppermost. The group of six are walking in an almost perfect V shape.

My question is what nationality do you think the farang are ? They certainly were not British, I viewed them for a good two hundred metres and not one of them staggered. What’s your guess, I’m clueless as to which nation is this organized.

Hoping your days itinerary lists a walk down Quality Street. Hoo Don.

HD-Slightly tongue in cheek I would suggest the family are German-precision, on the other hand they could be from an Arabic country since it was common practice to send the women in front of the camels during the desert war in case of land mines!

Hope you have had a great time here, safe journey home. I look forward to more “stable” posts, sorry meant to say posts on a more stable connection!

  2. Hoo Don says:

Mike for some reason I thought you were flying home on the 4th, I now see it is the 16th. Have a stable flight home. I reckon the women probably had the hump, the direction they were heading was fairly bland for the next couple of clicks. No shopping malls etc.

  3. Talen says:

I would have to agree with mike and say they are German.

My question would be…What draws you to Thailand?

  4. Hoo Don says:

Hello Talen – That’s a 11 and a half hour flying time question, one that should wring the last remnants of Chang out of my head. Excellent question.
German, must admit thought that myself, but swinging towards V for victory and Euro 2008, Spain. The blonde one doesn’t convince me though.
Surprised neither of you mentioned the snake. I said to myself before this holiday if we see a snake in the road (seen loads up country ) I will get out of the car and from a safe distance take a few pics. Me and Wilai just totally froze, we spent about 3 to 4 minutes just sat there and then with both of are eyes shut we somehow steered around it. When we got to the dog farm 3 km away neither of us would get out of the car, then we both got out together.Hoping hearting stopping might read heart stopping tomorrow. Cheers.

  5. Mike says:

I was going to mention the snake-that looks like a cobra, but since I have a mortal fear of them and have had to dispatch a couple (not cobra) in the garden I moved swiftly on to the Germans!

  6. Malcolm says:

Nope not Germans those are for sure Americans ,bald heads, pot bellys , and swinging their arms like they know it all and those shorts , no one else would be caught dead in them , and they are following two Thai ladies and a kid , looking for some good Thai food . at least thats what I think after a long, hard look. By the way , thats not blonde hair , thats old fart grey

  7. expatudon08 says:

from the back the guy in the brown shorts looks like dieter the german owner of ranch kate home of the best tbone steak in udon thani

  8. Hoo Don says:

Malcolm – Your strong words have convinced me, I am filing them as American. I hope my grey hairs turn that shade.
expatudon08 – I’ve never been to the Ranch Kate but next visit I will try and check it out.

  9. BritinBangkok says:

You can tell they’re not British, because the British guys usually have their socks pulled up to just below the knee when wearing shorts. WHY do they do that?????

  10. I vote Canadian. Smaller pot bellies and slightly more dress sense.

Anyway you would know for sure if they were American or not, assuming you took the photo from less than half a mile away, because you would have been able to hear every word of the conversation as if they were standing right next to you ;-)
