Harvey

Cola and Gaan

Bangkok PostA walk with our two young dogs Cola and Gaan along the tree lined stretch leading to Ban Norn Chad made for a relaxing early evening. After a couple of beers and an enjoyable meal I laid back and mused over the forthcoming end to my village stay.

I woke on the living room sofa about half an hour before midnight. The room was cool and the air con was purring away above me. Shortly afterwards it happened.

I’d fallen asleep about two hours before, it wasn’t excessive drink that had caused it, just the zap and sap of Thailand’s May temperatures. I had woken to no Wonderful Wi, she had retired to the bedroom while I had been sleeping. Should I have a Jack Daniel and Coke and then call it a day or just hit the sack dry. I raised my second glass and out of the corner of my eye I caught something white and cat size moving toward the bathroom.

NooI knew Wi would be asleep with the bedroom window wide open. I feared a wild cat had crept into the house and I was about to be mauled to pieces with my Bangkok Post as my only weapon to help me. I hoped that a photograph of PAD co leader Sondhi Limthongkul in a rather garish outfit on the front page might be enough to scare the cat off.

I turned and focused and there he was….Noo the bloody rabbit. It was hardly an Olympian effort but with a hop skip and jump, he was gone.

My self doubt twisted my intestines, napalmed my lungs as I realized I might be in an actual living remake of the 1950 movie Harvey starring James Stewart who plays an eccentric heavy drinker whose best friend is a six foot white rabbit named Harvey. I finished the remains of the JD bottle and went to bed. Perhaps I should have just had a Cola and Gaan to bed earlier.

Today is the last of my 11 day stay at our village home and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. Daily trips to Udon Thani, Nong Khai and Ban Dung have been the highlights of the daylight hours and quiet evenings at home with Wilai, her mother and Cola, Gaan and Noo have made my stay the best ever. My only regret has been the lack of qualitity internet service which has meant I have posted less frequent than I would have liked. For those reasons I now have a wealth of stories held back until my return home next week and I hope you’ll enjoy reading them. Tomorrow we are off to Udon for three days and Monday it’s Bangkok and England for me. I am hoping to post twice from Udon and so until then it’s all the best from me, Wilai and possibly…. Harvey. Chok dee krap.

Think you need to go on the carrot juice pretty quick. Another hare-brained story from the mysterious mind of Martyn :-)

PS was Harvey named after a certain mythical Manhattan beach surfer (Mr. Wallbanger)?

Pete – Another witty comment from the Frogblogger, as always. When are you landing in LOS. Will catch up with your latest posts on my return to Blighty next week. Cheers Pete.

Catherine – Thanks for following my holiday posts and I will be returning in September. The one good thing about going back to England is that my internet access is vastly improved. Once again thanks and I’ve got my fingers crossed that you make the Thailand 100 Top 10 next month.

Mike – I have been reliably told that the breed of rabbit is an English Lionheart which have now spread worldwide, a little like you expats. Great movie and I will catch your posts daily again as from Tuesday. Cheers Mike.

Harvey starring James Stewart is cinema classic, I cant believe you know that film haha brilliant !

  9. Hoo Don Says:

Adullamite I actually saw an elephant in the small local town, an amazing sight.

Mike – I’d had a few when I replied. Yes I know it’s a Lionhead but perhaps with the beer Lionheart seemed more English appropriate at the time. Thanks.

Udon Thani – I was not actually around in 1950 but alas it wasn’t too many years after. Thanks for your comment.
