The Heritage Hotel in Udon Thani is an ideal choice of accommodation for anyone visiting the city with a budget that’s kissing the eight ball. The Heritage Hotel ranks way down in a list of the best Udon Thani hotels but ranks high in mine as it’s a place I regularly choose to stay. Room rates are inexpensive and offer great value for money, plus, and it’s a big one for me, the hotel has an easy-going ambience and an energizing peace and quiet to it as well.
If you arrive by car the hotel has a parking lot the size of a three-quarter football pitch. It’s usually empty by midday but early evening returning guests fill it quick. The hotel caters for a lot of Thai company employees arriving in Udon Thani for business and conferences, as well those working in the service sector.
The Heritage Hotel is on Srisuk Road, about three kilometres from the city centre but handily placed to visit Udon Thani’s Nong Prajak Park and one of the many restaurants that surround it. Songthaew buses travel Srisuk Road throughout the day – ask at reception for those which go to the city centre, and if you need to venture far in the evening, samlors (a type of tuk-tuk), often pass-by the hotel entrance.
A standard room tips the scales at 390 baht (US$13) and its competitive price is acknowledged by the hotel’s high occupancy rate. At times the hotel is fully booked and if you want to guarantee a room it’s best to pre-book days ahead.
The rooms are basic, their style more sweet than suite, but each room has air con, a refrigerator, Cable/Satellite TV, twin or double bed, hot shower and a balcony. The hotel has Wi-Fi on site and a laundry service as well. The rooms may not pack the innovation of The Lollipop Shoppe but they function well and are reasonably sound proof too.
Free coffee is available 24/7 and the seating area at the hotel’s entrance is a popular early morning meeting point for friends and work colleagues. The one small fly in the ointment about the Heritage Hotel is you won’t get a fly in your soup – the hotel has no restaurant facility, though soft drinks and some snacks are available in the reception area.
The Heritage has plenty of outside seating arranged amongst flowers, potted pants, trees and shrubbery which pull together to dress up the hotel nicely. The garden area is a perfect place to start your day with a coffee or put the lights out with a cold beer.
The Heritage Hotel is bang on the buck in terms of value for money and a place I recommend to anyone visiting Udon Thani who might need to free up the eight ball or just want somewhere quiet and decent standard to stay.
